CAIR-Arizona Calls for Hate Crime Probe of ASU Vandalism Targeting Qurans in Interfaith Prayer Room

(PHOENIX, AZ, 12/9/2021) – The Arizona office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), a chapter of the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called for Arizona State University (ASU) and state and federal law enforcement authorities to investigate the burning of Islamic religious materials, including the Quran, in an interfaith prayer room.

A statement on Instagram by the ASU Muslim Students Association (MSA) said the vandalism occurred Dec. 8 at the interfaith room at the Hayden Library, which is frequented by Muslim students. The statement said the Islamic literature and copies of the Quran, Islam’s holy text, were torn and burned.

“University officials, along with state and federal law enforcement authorities, must take this matter seriously to ensure that students of all faiths at Arizona State University have a safe learning environment,” said CAIR-Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif. “Public officials and community leaders must speak out against the rising bigotry nationwide that inevitably leads to acts of hatred.”
