CME-US Non-Resident Research Fellow 2023-2024

The Center of Muslim Experience in the US at Arizona State University seeks to appoint three Non-Resident Research Fellows for the 2023-2024 academic year. CME-US’s mission is defined by three themes: Movement and Belonging; Social and Cultural Contributions; and American Muslim Values and Futures.

For the 2023-2024 academic year, our focus is on Movement and Belonging. We seek scholars, researchers, and journalists who will undertake research and write a report on one of the following issues:

  • Histories of Movement: Documenting the histories and diversity of movements to the United States of Muslims and patterns of conversion to Islam;

  • Placemaking: Creating a sense of belonging by establishing religious and secular organizations and associations, private and public cultural spaces, and ‘third spaces’;

  • Everyday Ethics: Benefitting America and American society through Muslim lived ethics of charity, hospitality, public work, and similar values and practices; Muslim attitudes and approaches to Islamophobia and living as a minority community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the co-directors to identify a research topic that aligns with advancing CME-US’s mission and objectives. Work can build upon one’s previously conducted or current research. The final project topic will be determined based on discussions with the co-directors.

  • Produce a high-quality, substantive report based on research findings to be presented to diverse audiences, including journalists, academics, and the public.

  • Attend CME-US’s monthly seminar virtually, and other relevant events, and actively participate in CME-US discussions and roundtables. Possible attendance of one event a year in person.

Qualifications

  • Living in the US and having work authorization in the US.

  • Advanced or professional degree in a relevant field; minimum Master’s degree, PhD preferred.

  • Demonstrated scholarly and/or journalistic knowledge of some aspect of Muslim American experiences.

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex information from a variety of sources.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, with the ability to present complex findings to diverse audiences.

Supervision

The non-resident fellows will report to the co-directors and work closely with other faculty and CME-US fellows, faculty, and staff. The Research Fellows are expected to perform their work virtually.

Compensation

The non-resident fellow will be compensated upon completion of their final deliverable a $10,000 honorarium. There is also the possibility of a one-time, fully covered, trip to Arizona State University (in case of need). The appointment is for one year (September 2023-August 2024) and is non-renewable. The position is a nonemployee fellowship and is not eligible for benefits.
